Carrying the Naija Spirit to Sydney: Dr Chioma Maduka

Every mile a message...

There are forms of advocacy that happen in clinics, and forms that happen along long stretches of road, twenty-six point two miles at a time. Dr Chioma Maduka, a mental health doctor, has chosen both.

In August, she will line up at the start of the Sydney Marathon, her fourth Abbott World Marathon Major. Berlin, Chicago, and most recently Tokyo in March of this year, are already behind her. Sydney will bring her to four of the seven stars. The remaining three will follow in time.

What started as a hobby has become something larger. Across more than ten marathons to date, and now three of the world's six majors, Chioma has come to understand running as a discipline that mirrors much of what good mental health work requires. Patience. Endurance. The willingness to keep moving when the early miles feel heavy. She is using this particular race to do something deliberate.

Chioma is running the Sydney Marathon for The Mental Health Foundation, the UK charity whose work centres on prevention, education, and community support across the spectrum of mental wellbeing. Her fundraising goal is £1,800. The Foundation has provided her place at the race, which gives her participation a unique kind of meaning. She is, in effect, running her own thanks back to them.

Her words carry the candour of someone who knows the territory from both sides. As a clinician, she sees daily how mental health challenges shape lives in ways often invisible to those around the person living through them. As a runner, she has experienced first-hand how movement, structure, and the company of a goal can steady a person against the harder weather of the mind. That dual view sits at the heart of her appeal. She is asking for support for a cause whose value she sees both in her consulting room and on her training routes.

There is something else worth noting. In communities where conversations about mental health are not always easy to have openly, the visibility of a Nigerian Psychiatrist running across continents to raise funds for mental wellbeing is itself a quiet form of advocacy. It widens the field of who gets to speak, and where, and with what authority.

The route to Sydney is long. Early mornings. Long Sunday runs. The slow accumulation of miles that no one sees. Chioma's journey carries the spirit NPUK was built to celebrate. We wish her well, and we will be cheering her every step of the way from London to Sydney.
